Why is this code printing “1” instead of “3456”?

I’ve written a method that takes a number and a number and prints the sum of the two. I was wondering if someone could explain why the sum is 1, not 3456, on this line:
System.out.println((x*y)+y);

I’m using an array of integer to do the multiplication, which means the values inside the arrays need to be multiplied together.
public class Multiplication {

public static void main(String[] args) {

int x[] = { 1, 2, 3 };
int y[] = { 4, 5, 6 };

System.out.println((x*y)+y);
}
}

I’m sure I’m missing something really obvious. Thanks for your help!

A:

It’s because you do the operation in the wrong order.
You should multiply x and y first, and then add x*y, not the other way around.
So change this:
System.out.println((x*y)+y);

to this:
System.out.println((x*y)+y);

A:

The problem is that you are trying to multiply x and y only once, not as array elements. Thus you see 1 printed out, as x and y
